Preparations:
Heat a steamer adding water into it. Wash the button idli plates with water so that plates are coated with water film. Using a small spoon add batter to the small cavities of idli plates. Arrange the plates in stand and place them in hot steamer and cook on high flame till pressure fully develops. Then cook idlis on low flame for 7-8 minutes. When idlis are touched with wet finger if batter sticks to finger cook for few more minutes and batter doesn’t stick then idlis are done. Remove the stand from steamer and separate the plates. Cool for a while and remove idlis with a wet spoon.
Peel and thinly slice onion. Wash and finely chop green chilies. Wash and finely chop coriander leaves. Wash and grate ginger.
Method:
Heat a pan and add oil and heat oil. When oil is hot add black gram and fry stirring till they start changing color. Then add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and fry stirring till seeds splutter. Then add curry leaves, finely chopped green chilies, grated ginger and fry stirring till chilies are slightly crisp. Then add sliced onions and fry stirring till they start turning brown. Then add 1/8tsp of IdliPodi and salt and mix. Then add prepared button idlis and toss well to coat the spices evenly. Transfer the tadkaidlis to serving plates and garnish with remaining IdliPodi and chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot TadkaIdli with chutney or sambar---they taste very well as they are also as we have added IdliPodi.
Points To Observe:
If button idli plates are not there one can also make regular idlis and cut them into even sized pieces and make this TadkaIdli.
Button idlis look cute in this dish---though it is difficult to fill the plates with tiny amount of batter in each slot, the end product looks colorful and attractive which is worth taking that pain.
Be very careful in adding salt to TadkaIdli as idli batter contains salt, IdliPodi also contains salt.

Serve tadkaidli hot and enjoy the crunch which comes from fried black gram.
